Juncosa: Culture, History and Circular Routes

In 1468, the parish church Església Parroquial de la Nativitat de Nostra Senyora was built outside Juncosa’s castle complex. It was expanded in the 18th century and has a neoclassical façade and a neoclassical tower. Its Baroque interior has three naves and a transept; the dome is painted with a starry sky, and there is also a mosaic floor, polychrome-painted walls and medallions depicting the four Evangelists.

A private vehicle is the best way to reach Juncosa, as there is no regular public transport there.

Culture

On Plaça del Mig del Món stands a 5,000 kg stone monument, inaugurated on 2 March 1997. The Porxo del mig is an arcade built of natural stone with a slightly flattened round arch and an inscription dating it to 21 April 1598. It was one of two entrances to Juncosa’s former castle complex.

History

The Ermita de Sant Joan is located about 1 km from Juncosa in a large rock shelter; its first documented mention dates from the late 16th century. According to local tradition, the water that emerges from a drip point beside the ermita is said to cure eye ailments; traditionally, people wash their eyes there for protection.

Nature and Trails

The Cova de Juncosa is a destination for boulderers and has climbing routes of a high degree of difficulty. A circular route of about 6 km, starting and ending in Juncosa, leads over steep inclines to Masia del Nogueret as well as walled rock shelters and vaulted huts; because of the significant elevation changes, the use of vehicles is discouraged.

A circular route of about 12 km, starting and ending in Juncosa, runs mostly along the LV-7011 road and leads to vaulted huts, walled rock shelters, cisterns and the abandoned settlement of La Sisquella. It is located about 6 km north of Juncosa and was first documented in 1152; today, the 1786 farmhouse Mas de la Sisquella and a standalone pointed arch from the 12th century remain there, as do the foundations of a defensive tower. A vehicle is recommended for the route.
