Discover Cubells: Churches, Trails and Regional Products

At the highest point of Cubells stands Santa Maria del Castell. It is the only surviving building from the former castle district of Cubells. Santa Maria del Castell includes a viewpoint overlooking the Ribera de Sió and the Pla d’Urgell.

Culture and History

The Church of Sant Pere was built in the 13th and 14th centuries in the transitional style from Romanesque to Gothic. Sant Pere is still home to the Romanesque polychrome wooden image of Mare de Déu de l’Esperança. The church also has a pulpit in a fully developed Gothic style, decorated with polychrome.

Sant Miquel is a small 13th-century chapel with a rectangular floor plan. Its apse is semicircular, while the nave is covered by a pointed barrel vault.

In the upper part of Cubells stands the Pou de Glaç, an icehouse built of stone. The structure is approximately 9 to 11 metres high and measures approximately 6 to 9 metres in diameter. La Teuleria is a brickworks with a square floor plan and a collapsed roof; the remains of the surrounding buildings presumably served as storage.

In the abandoned settlement of Pugis stand the Romanesque ruins of the Church of Sant Bartomeu de Pugis. Only the apse and part of the nave have survived. The church dedicated to Saint Salvador in Torre de Fluvià stands in a small hamlet southeast of Cubells. It has Romanesque origins and is located on a hillside.

Cubells and its immediate surroundings therefore preserve examples of different types of historic buildings: a parish church, chapel, icehouse, brickworks and the ruins of an abandoned settlement. The surviving details range from the Romanesque wooden image and Gothic pulpit to the apse, nave and various forms of vaulting.

Traditions and Regional Products

A silent procession takes place every year on 25 April. It leads from the parish church of Cubells to the hermitage of Salgar.

The Mercat de Nadal in Cubells takes place every year on the Saturday before Christmas. Its market features stalls offering handicrafts, food and drink, and products from the surrounding area.

Olive oil is produced in a cooperative in Cubells. When visiting the town, you can taste this olive oil.

Trails

The network of health trails in Cubells comprises eight routes. Three of these routes run entirely within Cubells. One leads within the municipality to Torre de Fluvià. The health trails lead to notable points in the municipality, including Sant Miquel, Sant Pere and the Pou de Gel.

The routes therefore include both religious buildings and the Pou de Gel as notable destinations. Some remain entirely within Cubells, while the network also identifies Torre de Fluvià as another place within the municipality.
