Granyena de les Garrigues: Churches, Cultural Heritage and Panoramic Views

Granyena de les Garrigues is home to the old and the current church of Sant Miquel. The current church was built between 1763 and 1800. Its façade is Baroque in design, while the interior is Neoclassical. Construction of the old church of Sant Miquel began in the 12th century, and it is a building representing the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. The historic centre preserves narrow streets and several medieval stone houses.

This means that two churches from different periods stand close together in the town centre: the current Sant Miquel combines a Baroque exterior with a Neoclassical interior, while the old church dates back to the 12th century. This historic setting is complemented by the narrow streets and preserved stone houses of the medieval-style centre.

History and Crafts

The Cabana de volta/Molí d’Estopà is the largest vaulted hut in the comarca. It served as a family oil mill. The Molí de la Societat was built in 1857 and expanded towards the end of the 19th century; this expansion is evidenced by the inscriptions. The Bassa Rodona dates back at least to the 17th century and is probably older. It is entirely paved, and a large staircase leads down to its centre.

The historic buildings display different ways of making use of local resources and labour: the Cabana de volta/Molí d’Estopà is a vaulted hut associated with its use as a family oil mill. At the Molí de la Societat, the later expansion can be dated on the basis of the inscriptions. With its paving and staircase leading to the centre, the Bassa Rodona preserves another distinctive structural feature.

The Cooperativa del Camp de Granyena de les Garrigues is registered under the protected designation of origin Les Garrigues.

The Sitja a la Roca and Ermita de la Mare Déu del Roser route is designated as a hiking route in Granyena de les Garrigues. The Festa de l’Oli de la Cooperativa takes place on a Sunday in January. The Bunker Escape de Granyena is one of the attractions of Granyena de les Garrigues.
