Torrebesses: Dry-Stone Landscapes, Trails and Culture

More than 400 dry-stone structures have been catalogued and inventoried in Torrebesses. Built over the course of centuries, these dry-stone structures have shaped valuable agricultural and livestock-farming landscapes throughout the municipality. Olive, almond and cereal crops are the defining features of these landscapes. In addition, the municipality has 500 kilometres of dry-stone boundary walls.

Nature

The Pedra Seca Route passes through a dry yet attractive landscape. Along the route, visitors can see well-preserved dry-stone huts, cisterns, wells and grain mills. These structures are directly connected to the agricultural areas and boundary walls that have shaped the municipality over a long period. For walks through open landscapes, it is advisable to check the current route conditions before setting out.

Trails

The Sant Roc Route begins at the Centre d’Interpretació de la Pedra Seca. It first passes the old Pou de la Vila and, after a short ascent, reaches the Sant Roc hermitage. The route also passes through pistachio fields and reaches the well-restored dry-stone hut Cabana de la Falsa Cúpula.

The route through the Pedra Seca landscapes includes a visit to the Centre d’Interpretació de la Pedra Seca and a guided tour. This tour introduces visitors to the dry landscape surrounding the area and its dry-stone structures. Thus, both the architectural heritage and the landscapes shaped by it are among the stops on this route. Guided routes can be incorporated into the day’s plans using the current dates and start times; these details should be checked before travelling.

Culture

The Església Nova is an unfinished 19th-century church. The Molí del Bep de Canut is an oil mill dating from the mid-19th century and is in perfect condition. The two buildings represent different historical uses: sacred architecture meets olive oil processing here.

The monumental route includes visits to the Església Nova and the Romanesque Església de Sant Salvador. The Església de Sant Salvador is classified as a cultural asset of national interest and contains a Gothic altarpiece from the Lleida school that is unique in the comarca.

The guided monumental route visits the Centre d’Interpretació de la Pedra Seca, the Sitges, the Església de Sant Salvador, the Església Nova, and the façades of Casa Gort and Casa Oró. When visiting churches, mills and interpretation centres, their respective opening hours are part of the visit planning.

Gastronomy

The guided gastronomic route includes a visit to the old Molí del Bep de Canut and the current Cooperativa del Camp de Torrebesses. It ends with an olive oil tasting. A tasting can be scheduled based on the current date and noted as a separate item alongside the visits.
