Discover Algerri: Els Trullets and Castell d’Algerri
Culture and history
A total of 26 Els Trullets have been documented and catalogued in Algerri; they are distributed across three areas with 10, 11 and 5 structures. This distribution is just as much a part of the character of the site as its location outside the village of Algerri. Els Trullets are integrated into the Espai d’Interès Natural la Serra Llarga and arranged along the slopes of Serra Llarga.
Els Trullets were used to store wine during fermentation. It was then taken out for trade or consumption. The site therefore brings together the structures, the slopes of Serra Llarga and its former use for wine storage. The three areas, with their differing numbers of structures, make the spatial layout of Els Trullets clear.
Castell d’Algerri stands at the top of a hill. From there, it offers a privileged view over the southern and northern parts of the municipality of Algerri. The hill is also associated with archaeological finds: ceramic remains from the Iberian and Roman periods were found on the hill of Castell d’Algerri.
The Església de Nostra Senyora de la Purificació is a Baroque church. It is protected as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Local. Another historic site is Font de Baix, which was used as a livestock watering place and as a washing place for laundry. These sites reveal different aspects of the village’s history: former use for wine storage, a fortified structure on the hill, sacred architecture and everyday tasks at a water source.
