Vilagrassa: Churches, History and Holiday Apartments

The Church of Santa Maria in Vilagrassa preserves burials from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a Renaissance portico dating from 1549. The church portal dates from the 13th century and is late Romanesque, associated with the Lleida school and decorated with biblical scenes. The bell tower is Romanesque with Gothic influences, leans 80 centimetres to the south and was built in two phases.

Culture

The Ermita del Roser is a three-bay chapel dating from the 16th century, built in the Gothic Renaissance style with rib vaults and stone vault caps. It was restored in the early 1990s and continues to be a cultural and heritage landmark of Vilagrassa.

The Fita de Montalbà stands on the road to the Pont del Teto of the Canal d'Urgell and preserves historic territorial inscriptions, including “MONTALBA” and “TERME DEL DUCH DE SESSA”, as well as a patriarchal cross. Cal Botes is a Renaissance mansion in Vilagrassa; according to the date engraved on the tympanum of the main window, it dates from 1582.

The Capella del Mas de l'Estadella is a 16th-century Renaissance chapel dedicated to the Mare de Déu del Roser. It has a rectangular floor plan and a partially collapsed barrel vault with lunettes. The restored Pou de la Plaça del Filador is a covered well from the Early Modern period that was used for storing and supplying water.

Cal Fèlix dates from the second half of the 16th century and preserves a moulded window and a flattened basket-handle-arch portal. The Torre del Pagès or Torre del Governador is a group of several buildings arranged around a courtyard; the main building consists of three sections, with a tower-like central section and an arcaded gallery on the upper floor. The silos of “lo sitjar” were used to store grain in the 17th and 18th centuries.

A house in the historic centre of Vilagrassa preserves a portal made of voussoirs on the ground floor, typical of the 16th and 17th centuries; the Passatge de Lluís Companys also runs through the house, with a slightly pointed round arch.

Routes and Nature

A section of the Camí de Sant Jaume runs through Vilagrassa and Anglesola and continues towards Lleida. The Anglesola–Vilagrassa route passes through grain fields where species such as the corn bunting, partridge and quail can be observed, but especially the Montagu’s harrier. A municipal tourist information office is listed for Vilagrassa at C. de Tàrrega 12, 25330 Vilagrassa.

Traditions

On 16 August 2027, the Festa de Sant Roc in Vilagrassa includes an Aplec at the chapel of the Mare de Déu del Roser and the traditional Cossos de Sant Roc race through the town centre. The Fira de l'Ametlla is an event in Vilagrassa dedicated to almonds; almond cultivation has long been a supplementary crop of family farming there.
