Discover Almenar: Mill, Horta and Culture
In its specific sites, Almenar brings together the world of agricultural work, medieval craftsmanship, milling technology and a landscape shaped by water. In the old town, this trail begins at the Museu Casa Tonot, while the Camí del Riu shows the connection between the river ecosystem and the irrigated Horta.
Culture and History
The Museu Casa Tonot is located in a single ground-floor room in Almenar’s old town, on Carrer Major. Inside, the historic structure has been preserved, with vaulted ceilings, stone pillars, as well as stone feeding troughs and stone basins. The themed areas display tools from the world of agricultural work.
El Pouet de Gel is an ice house built into a hill near the de la Munya bridge, beside the irrigation channel. It is 8.25 metres high and has a base diameter of 6.85 metres. The first specific information about the Molí fariner in Almenar dates from 1328. At that time, a royal privilege was granted for the construction of a grain mill.
The Molí fariner had three millstones and a regulated water system. The water that flowed away after being used as an energy source returned to the irrigation channel through four arches. The mill is therefore connected both with grain processing and with the watercourse of the irrigation landscape.
The Mercat Medieval includes demonstrations of medieval crafts; the market takes place on the second weekend of June. A visit to the Museu Casa Tonot is scheduled for the first Sunday of each month. For museums with a scheduled visit on the first Sunday, it is advisable to check the current opening hours before travelling; the monthly schedule does not automatically specify the exact times. For events tied to a particular weekend, the current event dates and times should be checked before setting out on the trip.
Waterways and Horta
The Camí del Riu route in Almenar provides access to the river ecosystem and the Horta created by irrigation. It has hardly any inclines, is in good condition and is considered a pleasant, easy-to-walk route. For a route with hardly any inclines and in good condition, an up-to-date note about the route’s condition may also be taken into account before setting out.
Nature between Alguaire and Almenar
The Clot de la Unilla lies between Alguaire and Almenar. It is a sizeable endorheic lagoon that may be the best-preserved one in Catalonia. Only in years with abundant rainfall does the Clot de la Unilla temporarily become a seasonal lagoon. Over the past 40 years, this occurred approximately once every three years.
