Fondarella: Crafts, Churches and the Route to Sidamon

Fondarella's Mostra d'Oficis i Artesania presents around thirty traditional crafts. The Mostra d'Oficis i Artesania de Fondarella was created with the aim of reviving the roots of society and folk culture. At the Mostra, visitors could see how Caliquenyes and Orelletes were made in Fondarella.

Route

The “De Fondarella a Sidamon” route begins on the Camí de Mollerussa near the railway tracks. As it continues, it leaves the built-up area of Fondarella. It then reaches the Canal Auxiliar d'Urgell. It continues through the area of Sidamon before subsequently returning to Fondarella.

Its course therefore connects the starting point on the Camí de Mollerussa with the built-up area, the Canal Auxiliar d'Urgell and the area of Sidamon. The return to Fondarella is also part of the described route.

Architectural Features

The parish church of Santa Maria in Fondarella has Romanesque origins. The parish church was rebuilt in the 15th century. Santa Maria consists of three naves. The church also has three elongated, semicircular apses. Its façade is made of grey stone blocks. This façade features a voussoired portal. A profiled oculus is also part of the façade design. The upper end is formed by a triangular, profiled bell gable.

Several clearly identified architectural features come together at Santa Maria: its Romanesque origins, the rebuilding in the 15th century, the three-nave layout and the three apses. The façade is also structured by individual forms. The grey stone blocks make up its surface, while the portal, oculus and bell gable provide different accents within the façade design.

The Ermita de Sant Sebastià is a simple chapel. The building has a single nave. The chapel is located directly in the village of Fondarella. It is also situated at a crossroads. The Ermita de Sant Sebastià has a bell gable with an opening. At both corners are spiral-shaped column finials made of brick.

At the Ermita de Sant Sebastià, the simple, single-nave form stands alongside the distinctive finials of the bell gable. The opening in the gable is just as much part of the building as the spiral-shaped brick column finials at both corners. Its location at a crossroads and directly in the village of Fondarella also adds the stated local context to the architectural description.

Cal Reinyé is a two-storey corner house. Its façade features dressed lintels. The lintel of the central balcony bears the name PERE REINYÉ.

At Cal Reinyé too, the characteristic detail is found on the façade. The dressed lintels give the two-storey corner house a clearly described exterior design; the central balcony also bears the specific inscription PERE REINYÉ on its lintel.

Local Life

A weekly market takes place in Fondarella every Sunday. The market is therefore part of the regularly recurring local life and is tied to a fixed day of the week.
