Canalda: Roca de Canalda, Caves and Sant Julià
The Roca de Canalda is almost two kilometres long and, in some places, more than 200 m high.
Nature and climbing
The Canalda climbing area comprises four multicoloured conglomerate walls. Climbing is possible at the Roca de Canalda all year round; the climbing routes are up to 300 m long.
Hiking and routes
The GR 1 crosses the municipality of Odèn from Canalda to la Valldan and is marked with white and red trail markings. A circular route at the foot of the Roca de Canalda begins in the village of Canalda. From east to west, this circular route follows the entire rock face. The Roca de Canalda, Balmes route passes beneath the Coves del Moros. The Volta per Canalda route includes a botanical nature trail. It also passes a section marked with the white and red trail markings of the GR 1.
Culture and history
The square apses of the Romanesque parish church of Sant Julià in Canalda date from the 9th or 10th century. The caves of the Roca de Canalda have been inhabited for a long time; some were still inhabited until a few decades ago. On Puig-arnau stands a small chapel dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. Puig-arnau is home to one of the largest and oldest masias.
Ca la Rita, also known as Cal Cavallol, is located in the largest cave of the Roca de Canalda and is a two-storey residential building. Ca la Rita was formerly known as Cal Llop and subsequently as Cal Cavallol; the year 1819 is engraved at the entrance and on the opening of the oven. The Coves dels Moros hang halfway up the rock face and cannot be accessed without climbing equipment. One of the Coves dels Moros still retains a stone wall. At Ca l'Andreu, only the walls of the main building remain. Espluga de Melera is a group of three caves without buildings.
The Festa Major de Canalda normally takes place on the weekend closest to the feast of Mercè. On Saturday evening during the Festa Major de Canalda, there is a concert featuring traditional music, as well as sandwiches for those who wish to have dinner.
