Vilamòs: Ecomusèu, Santa Maria and routes to Montlude

Culture

At the Ecomusèu Çò de Joanchiquet, Vilamòs showcases the traditional Aranese building type known as an “auviatge”. The complex includes a house, barns, a dovecote, and a pigsty. The buildings are grouped around an enclosed courtyard. Residential and agricultural buildings thus stand together as part of a shared courtyard complex. The Ecomusèu offers an audioguide with 23 entries in Aranese, Catalan, Spanish, French, and English. The explanations are therefore available in five language versions and accompany visitors as they explore the building complex.

History

The church of Santa Maria de Vilamòs has a Romanesque bell tower type of which only two examples survive in the Val d’Aran. The other is located at the church of Bossòst. Roman funerary stelae are set into the walls of Santa Maria de Vilamòs. Some of these stelae are visible from outside, particularly at the bell tower. Romanesque architectural forms and visible evidence from Roman times therefore meet directly at the church.

Sant Miquèu de Vilamòs is an 11th-century hermitage in the Lombard Romanesque style. It is a 15-minute walk from the village of Vilamòs. The hermitage stands on a promontory. From this promontory, views extend across the Garona Valley, Artiga de Lin, and the Aneto Massif. The path connects the village area with a historic religious building and a viewpoint overlooking several named landscapes.

Landscape

Paths in the vicinity of Vilamòs pass through large green meadows. Natural springs and viewpoints can be found along the routes. During the snowmelt, seasonal ponds filled with water can be found there.

The Safareig de Vilamòs is a covered complex approximately 20 metres long. It includes a spring, a livestock watering trough, and a washhouse. The year 1775 is engraved on a marble pillar. The site thus preserves several functions of everyday life in the past in one place; its length, roof, and inscription are just as much part of its appearance as its three components.

Routes

The linear route from Vilamòs to Montlude at an elevation of 2,517 metres follows forest roads and high-alpine paths through alpine meadows and black pine forests. The route is 11.4 kilometres long. It runs between the municipalities of Les and Vilamòs in the Val d’Aran. The ascent involves 640 metres of elevation gain.

Tradition

A thematic route through the old town of Vilamòs and its surroundings uses a total of eight explanatory and visual elements to highlight traditional occupations and the roles of women in former Aranese society. Vilamòs also has the “Gòis en aunor de Sant Ròc” in honour of Sant Ròc. Sant Ròc is the patron saint of Vilamòs.
