Discover Peramola: Rock Art, Rock Formations and Churches

Peramola is home to the Roc del Rumbau rock art site. It is one of the outstanding sites open to visitors that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the designation “Art Rupestre de l’Arc Mediterrani de la Península Ibèrica” (ARAMPI).

Information panels stand at the Roca del Rumbau site. The paintings there are protected by a metal fence and can be viewed from outside the fence. This means that viewing remains restricted to the area in front of the enclosure, while the information is displayed directly at the site.

At Roca del Corb, the Ruta del Corb i Sant Honorat route leads to the remains of the 11th-century Romanesque church of Sant Salvador. The path thus connects the named rock site with a surviving medieval sacred structure.

Landscape

The Roques del Corb are conglomerate rock formations within the municipality of Peramola.

The Roques de Sant Honorat are crowned by the hermitage of the same name. The hermitage dates from the 18th century and is located near steeply rising cliffs. Here, the name of the rock formation, the historic building and the vertical shape of the cliffs come together in a single landscape.

The rock formations of Corb and Sant Honorat therefore differ in their respective named connections to buildings: on the one hand, there is Roca del Corb with the remains of Sant Salvador; on the other, the Roques de Sant Honorat with their hermitage.

History

In the centre of Peramola, Sant Miquel de Peramola is now the chapel of the old cemetery. The surviving apse of Sant Miquel de Peramola is the last preserved relic of a church built in the 11th century in the Lombard style. The present-day chapel site and the surviving apse thus belong to the same named location in the centre of the village.

Trails

The Camí de les fonts begins at the washhouse next to the Font de la Segla at the entrance to Peramola.

The path passes the Espai Miquel Martí i Pol. There, a large stone bears a poem created by the sculptor Toni Comella. Thus, the route includes both the named starting point and the poem stone with its explicitly named creator.

Local area

Formatgeria Castell-llebre produces cheese from goat’s milk. Castell-llebre is also home to a bell tower with a square floor plan.

The bell tower has two storeys that rise above the nave. Twin windows are located on all four sides. Its external appearance is therefore defined not only by its square floor plan, but also by the two projecting storeys and the arrangement of the windows.

The Castell-llebre festival takes place on the Sunday closest to 25 April.
