Castellnou de Seana: History, Routes and Rural Landscape

The origins of Castellnou de Seana as a settlement centre are documented as early as the 12th century through its Carta de Poblament. On 25 May 1179, the Carta de Poblament of Castellnou de Seana was granted to 47 settlers; it encompassed the castle and the territory of Castellnou.

History and Cultural Heritage

Sant Joan Baptista is an 18th-century religious building in the Baroque style. A new three-nave church was built on the site of the former Sant Joan Baptista church. A plaque attached to Sant Joan Baptista commemorates Pere Carrera i Torrent, the last abbot of Santes Creus and a native son of Castellnou.

The Cafè Modern was built in 1932 as the headquarters of the Joventut Republicana. On the southern side of Plaça de l'Església, the base of the wayside cross del Gomà is preserved.

Landscape and Geographical Setting

In the southern part of the municipality of Castellnou de Seana, the Riu Corb runs from east to west. Cereal, fodder and fruit fields irrigated by the Canal d'Urgell characterise the rural landscape of the municipality of Castellnou de Seana.

The “Vallbona de les Monges – Castellnou de Seana” stage of the Camí de Sant Jaume is 21.9 kilometres long and can be completed entirely by bicycle. On the section of the Camino Ignaciano between El Palau d'Anglesola and Verdú, Castellnou de Seana is reached after 7.84 kilometres at Plaça Major; the route then continues along Carrer del Calvari.

The signposted section of the Camino Ignaciano between El Palau d'Anglesola and Verdú can also be travelled by gravel bike or off-road vehicle. A route from Vila-sana to Ivars d'Urgell reaches Castellnou de Seana after 3.36 kilometres.

The 21.9 kilometres of the stage give this section a clearly quantified length; at the same time, its complete cyclability is explicitly part of the route description. For the Camino Ignaciano, travelling by gravel bike and off-road vehicle are additionally documented means of transport. Arrival at Plaça Major and the subsequent route along Carrer del Calvari mark the described section through the town.

Festivals and Local Sweet Treat

The Orelleta is considered an emblematic sweet treat of Castellnou de Seana. The Cursa i caminada de l'Orelleta is held every year in honour of the local sweet treat. The Festes Majors of Castellnou de Seana fill the streets with music and communal celebrations.
