Camarasa: Cave Paintings, Nature and the Reservoir

Camarasa combines the cave paintings of Cova del Tabac with medieval village history, protected natural areas and activities at several reservoirs. The cave preserves rock paintings; the cultural heritage preserved within it is recognized by UNESCO. Guided tours of Cova del Tabac are available for groups by prior reservation. Tours should be planned with regard to current opening hours and available dates, while current trail conditions deserve separate preparation when hiking and cycling. For kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and light watercraft, it is also advisable to check the applicable times and conditions before departure.

Culture and History

The medieval village of Camarasa extends around the castle hill, with narrow, steep streets. Its historical heritage includes the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel. El Merengue offers a different perspective on history: during the fighting in May 1938 in the Spanish Civil War, this site was a strategic position.

Another historical route follows the construction of the Camarasa hydroelectric power station. The second section, accessible by car, leads to remains of the transport infrastructure, the former works hospital and the managers’ camp. Nature by the Water

The Sant Llorenç de Montgai Reservoir is part of a nature reserve known for its high landscape value and abundance of waterfowl. The Ruta de la ribera circles the reservoir and passes through lush woodland. The route is suitable for peaceful walks; it is also considered to have educational and ecological value. The alternation of water and woodland shapes the course of this route.

The protected natural areas shaping the landscapes of Camarasa include the Espacio Natural Protegido Confluencia Segre-Noguera Pallaresa. The calm waters of Camarasa Reservoir are also part of the local range of activities: kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and trips in light watercraft are possible.

Hiking, Climbing and Cycling

Camarasa offers numerous signposted hiking trails for all levels of difficulty. These include paths, trails, forest tracks and suspension bridges. Those looking for different surfaces and types of trail while hiking will find both classic paths and sections running along forest tracks and suspension bridges.

Camarasa has more than 660 sport climbing routes and around 200 multi-pitch routes. The approximate number of multi-pitch routes remains distinct from the larger number of sport climbing routes. There are also various options on two wheels: Camarasa offers cycling tours for different levels, from family routes to more demanding routes for experienced cyclists. The range therefore extends from shared outings to physically challenging tours.
