Cabanabona: Churches, Castle History and Landscape

In the municipality of Cabanabona, the single-nave Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Vilamajor stands in Vilamajor. It is a church building with only one nave and Romanesque architectural features.

The parish church of Cabanabona is dedicated to John the Baptist and bears the Catalan name Sant Joan Baptista.

The manor house of Cabanabona is an 18th-century building. Its design includes Renaissance ornaments.

The hermitage of Sant Pol is a 17th-century building. It stands on a hill at an altitude of approximately 500 metres.

There is a viewpoint at the hermitage of Sant Pol. From there, visitors can enjoy a panorama over agricultural fields and the Serra del Cadí.

The former manor house of the town's former lords stands in the centre of Cabanabona.

History

The chapel of Sant Pol i Sant Sebastià preserves a Romanesque apse. This apse dates from the 12th century and is currently being restored.

The present-day building of the church of Sant Joan de Cabanabona dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It preserves no remains of the former Romanesque church.

A gathering is held at the hermitage of Sant Pol. It takes place on the Sunday before the Monday of Pasqua Granada.

Castell de Cabanabona Castle is first mentioned in 1040. It was one of the fortresses on the southern border of the County of Urgell.

The tower of Vilamajor Castle stands in the municipality of Cabanabona. It is approximately 5 metres wide and about 14 metres high. Its final 2 metres date from a restoration.

During the restoration of the tower of Vilamajor Castle, adjoining houses were demolished. Before that, these houses had obstructed the tower's visibility.

Landscape

The surroundings of Cabanabona offer opportunities for hiking. The trails pass through the municipality's flat terrain and over smaller hilly elevations.

The trails around Cabanabona are suitable for rural cycling tours.

The medieval deserted settlement of Vilaior lies in the immediate vicinity of the chapel of Sant Pol. It is located approximately 3 km west of Cabanabona.

Getting There

There is no public transport in Cabanabona. A private vehicle is required to get there.

Cabanabona's town centre is small enough to explore on foot.
