Discover Les Oluges: History, Landscapes and Routes

Les Oluges lies on both sides of the upper valley of the Ribera del Riu Sió. The village stands on a hill surrounded by plains and has medieval origins.

Landscape

The landscape around Les Oluges is shaped by dry farming of barley and wheat, as well as the cultivation of olives, almonds and grapevines. There are various hiking routes in the surroundings of Les Oluges. Gastronomic and wine tourism visits are offered in the area around Les Oluges.

Culture

The current building of Santa Maria d’Oluja is a Neoclassical structure whose bell tower retains a few medieval elements. The history of Santa Maria d’Oluja is documented at least as far back as 1106; that year, the church was transferred to the Solsona canonry. Near the parish church stands Castell de l’Oluja Jussana, a building dating from the 16th century.

The present-day temple of Sant Salvador retains almost none of its medieval structure. Sant Salvador is the chapel of the former castle of l’Oluja Sobirana and was probably built in the 11th century. In Les Oluges, the Torre de defensa d’Oluges survives as part of the historical heritage.

Historic Sites

Castell de l’Oluja Alta is considered an 11th-century castle that belonged to the County of Berga. In the surroundings of Les Oluges, Montfalcó Murallat preserves a surrounding wall, a single entrance and a central cistern.

Castell de Santa Fe de Segarra is located in the upper part of Santa Fe de Segarra, a settlement within the municipality of Les Oluges. It is a large manor house at the highest point of the settlement, was altered in the 18th century and is now divided into several apartments. Its main portal preserves a semicircular arch and large voussoirs; the central voussoir bears an inscription carved with the year 1729, indicating a structural alteration.

The Església de Sant Pere de Santa Fe is a 12th-century Romanesque church in Santa Fe, a settlement of Les Oluges. In Cal Franquesa, one of Santa Fe’s defensive towers survives; it features regular masonry and defensive loopholes. Vila Closa de Santa Fe was originally laid out around the castle at the highest point of the settlement.

The main festival of Les Oluges takes place on the Sunday after Easter and is called Pasqüetes.

Routes

Santa Fe de Segarra can be reached from Cervera via the N-141 and then the LV-1004. After approximately 6 km on the N-141, the LV-1004 branches off to the right and leads directly into the village after a further 1.5 km. In the surroundings of Les Oluges, Montfalcó Murallat can be reached via the local LV-1003 road, which branches off from the N-141 eastwards towards Sant Guim de Freixenet.
