Culture and history

At the transition between the plateau and the valley of the River Corb lies Castell de Guimerà; the ruins include a vertically divided tower, approximately 20 metres high, standing directly on the rock.

Castell de Guimerà originated as a watchtower from the 11th century on the border with the Islamic territory and was first documented in 1038.

The Església de Santa Maria was built in the 14th century; construction continued until the mid-15th century, when the bell tower was completed.

The Església de Santa Maria contains an alabaster altarpiece of the Assumption of Mary from 1940 by Josep M. Jujol, in a style influenced by Gaudí.

The Capella de Sant Esteve is a 14th-century chapel that was attached to the local hospital and displays reproductions of two Gothic panels by the painter Ramon de Mur.

The Santuari de la Bovera is located 2 km from Guimerà on a hill overlooking the landscape of the comarca; next to the present-day chapel is part of the Romanesque cloister of the 12th-century Cistercian nunnery of Bovera.

The historic centre of Guimerà comprises stone houses, arches, covered structures and arcades along narrow, stepped alleyways.

The Museu de Guimerà – La Cort del Batlle is located at Plaça Major in the heart of Guimerà’s medieval old town.

The Museu de Guimerà – La Cort del Batlle has been adapted for access by people with reduced mobility.

The ground floor of the Museu de Guimerà displays the “Sepulcre de Bernat de Boixadors” by the master Guillem Seguer from the 14th century, as well as eleven tomb slabs from excavations carried out in 2011.

The “Terra de Monestirs” exhibition at the Museu de Guimerà focuses almost entirely on the Santa Maria de Vallsanta monastery.

Paths and landscape

The “La Bovera i el Riu Corb” route leads to the Santuari de la Bovera and offers views of the River Corb, Ciutadilla and the Urgell region.

The “Ruta de la pedra seca” runs along the southern slope of the municipality of Guimerà towards the plains of Verdú and passes old dry-stone walls and abandoned fields.

Guided tours and festivals

Guided visits to the Museu de Guimerà and the medieval Vila Medieval of Guimerà can be booked for any day of the year by telephone, WhatsApp or via the booking form.

At the Fira Medieval de Guimerà, more than twenty craftspeople demonstrate historic trades, including blacksmithing, glassmaking, stoneworking, esparto-grass work, basket weaving, parchment work, cooperage and ceramics.

The medieval market of Guimerà takes place approximately on the second weekend of August.
