Enviny: Gothic Retable and Routes to Sant Roc

Enviny is a mountain village at an elevation of 1,134 m above the Barranc de Montardit. In the parish church of Mare de Déu de la Purificació, also known as Candelera, the tower has an octagonal upper storey and a pyramidal roof. In front of Enviny's parish church lies a necropolis with five tombs dating from the 9th and 10th centuries.

Other destinations include Burg, Son, Abella De La Conca, Talavera, Sort, Cóll, Vilanova De Bellpuig and Llesp.

Culture

The original Gothic retable in Enviny was created in 1490 by the painter Pere Espallargues. It was sold around 1909 and is now divided between the Hispanic Society of America in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A complete reproduction of Enviny's Gothic retable, made using the Catalan Papelgel technique, was inaugurated in 2009. In this way, the preserved church building, the historic original and its later reproduction stand side by side within the same local history.

History

Enviny's former school building, the Estudis, served as the setting for Jaume Cabré's novel and the miniseries Les Veus del Pamano. A photograph of pupils from Enviny's former school, taken in front of the school building, became the cover image of Les Veus del Pamano. The former manor house Casa Aytés is also among Enviny's notable architectural buildings.

Landscape

The ruins of Sant Roc are located in the immediate vicinity of Enviny. They belong to a single-nave church with a semicircular apse; no roof remains. A 1 km-long path leads to the ruins and preserves its old paving in sections. From Sant Roc, there is a view of the Torreta del Orri to the east and the Montardit valley. The path thus connects the surviving sections of the old paving with a church ruin and a view across the landscape.

Routes

On the section from Enviny to Bressui of the route through the Batlliu de Sort, the path descends along a heavily paved track damaged over time. At 2:25 hours, a few minutes after the path branches off, the route through the Batlliu de Sort reaches the ruins of Sant Roc at an elevation of 1,304 m. In Enviny, the route through the Batlliu de Sort passes the ruins of the chapel of Santa Llúcia.

Festivals

Enviny's Festa Major takes place on the penultimate weekend of September. Enviny's Aplec takes place on 1 May at the Mare de Déu de Soler sanctuary.

Getting There

The local LV-5222 road begins in Enviny and connects the village to Sort via Llarvén and Montardit de Dalt. From Sort to Enviny, a demand-responsive transport service in the Batlliu area and a taxi service are listed; the telephone number for the demand-responsive service is 689495777.
