Argolell: Romanesque Art, Cliffs and the Camí d’Andorra

The Cingleres de Sant Joan i Argolell are large south-facing cliffs between Argolell and Sant Joan Fumat. They consist of Devonian limestone that is approximately 385 million years old. Bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons are found on these cliffs. Geology and wildlife come together here in the same named landscape feature: the rock points to a great geological age, while five bird-of-prey species represent the distinctive natural character of the Cingleres.

Culture

Santa Eugènia d’Argolell is designated as a cultural asset of local interest. The church has Romanesque remains from the 12th century and a raised apse facing east with a semi-elliptical floor plan. The building thus combines several clearly recognisable features of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture, without its present form having to be reduced to a single construction phase.

Santa Eugènia d’Argolell also contains fragments of Romanesque wall paintings. They include depictions of the Apostles Paul and Philip, the heads of two other apostles, and the head of the Virgin Mary. A Romanesque pictorial programme from Santa Eugènia d’Argolell is kept at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. The church itself, its wall-painting fragments and the pictorial programme held in the museum each constitute independent testimonies to the history of the place.

Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture also includes Santa Maria de Feners in les Valls de Valira. The church has a small, almost square nave and a semicircular apse. Its architectural form stands alongside the Romanesque remains and the raised apse of Santa Eugènia d’Argolell.

Routes

The Camí d’Andorra follows a route from Bellestar via Cal Roger, the Collada de la Torre and the Río de Civís to Argolell. In addition, the Camí d’Andorra offers the guided route “Collada de la Torre y Argolell” all year round upon request. Confirmation one week in advance is required for this guided route. The two details therefore mention both a specific route with several stops and a guided option subject to a time requirement.

A path near La Farga de Moles leads to Argolell and Arduix. In addition to the route via Bellestar, Cal Roger, the Collada de la Torre and the Río de Civís, this also describes a connection linking Argolell and Arduix. The routes mentioned differ in their respective designated starting and intermediate points. For guided routes, current dates and trail conditions should be checked before travelling.

Festivals

The Festa Major of Argolell takes place on the second Sunday in October. The festival of the Mare de Déu de Feners is also celebrated in Argolell on 1 June. Both dates are among the explicitly named festivals of the village, but fall on different days of the year.
