La Granadella: Old Town, Music and Olive Oil Culture

La Granadella combines historical traces, Catalan music and olive oil culture. The remains of the old castle, the town walls and the silos have been preserved in the historic centre. The old town also includes the arcades of Plaça Major and the remains of the walled town.

Culture and history

The church of Santa Maria de Gràcia is a Baroque building with three naves; its construction began in 1764. It is designated as a cultural asset of national interest (Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional). The Ermita de Sant Antoni Abat dates from the 14th century. Together, the church and the ermita represent historical evidence ranging from the medieval chapel to the Baroque church building.

Music events are also among La Granadella’s recurring cultural features. At least one concert takes place in La Granadella during every edition of the Garrigues Guitar Festival. The La Granadella Festival of popular and traditional Catalan music takes place in the second half of August and has been held since 1993. The programme therefore combines guitar music with popular and traditional forms of Catalan music.

The Desclavament of La Granadella has been performed for more than 300 years; there were interruptions during the Civil War and the pandemic. The long performance tradition and the aforementioned interruptions form part of the event’s recorded history.

Landscape and trails

The GR 65-5 passes through La Granadella and is a branch of the Camí de Sant Jaume, the Way of St James. From the Mirador de l’Ebre at Coll de Bovera, the view extends downstream along the Ebro towards Ribera d’Ebre and Priorat. The Mirador dels Pirineus at the Ermita de Sant Antoni offers expansive views of the landscape to the north. The two viewpoints complement each other through their different directions of view: the Mirador de l’Ebre follows the Ebro downstream, while the Mirador dels Pirineus faces north.

For excursions into the surrounding area, La Granadella has a hub on the Burricleta network. Fully equipped electric bicycles are available at the hub. The network and the Way of St James branch that passes through the town therefore represent two different ways of exploring the landscape along trails.

Olive oil and production culture

The Centre de la Cultura de l’Oli offers guided oil tastings. These can be combined with visits to the centre and the museum. At the Museu de l’Oli de Catalunya in La Granadella, visitors can choose between an audio-guided visit and a guided tour. Tasting, a museum visit and a guided tour can thus be experienced as interconnected elements of the olive oil theme.

The visit includes a tour of modern production facilities as well as one of the oldest and best-preserved oil mills in the comarca.
