Oliana: Hiking Trails, Rock Formations and Traditions

The Sant Andreu del Castell hiking trail is an easy trail and 6 km long. It takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk. On the ascent, it has an elevation gain of +219 m, and on the descent, −218 m.

The Camí de les Fonts is an easy trail that is 8 km long. Its elevation gain is approximately 350 m. The route is expected to take around 2 hours.

The Camí de la Serra d’Oliana is classified as moderate and is 17 km long. The route has an elevation gain of approximately 400 m. Its stated duration is 4 to 5 hours.

The Camí del GR1 - Les Encantades is a difficult trail. It covers 25 km and has an elevation gain of approximately 950 m. It takes 6 to 7 hours.

Landscape

The GR1 passes the rounded rock formations of Les Encantades. In shape, they resemble Montserrat. One of these formations is called "Les amoroses".

The Camí de les Fonts connects several fountains. Its route leads to the church of Sant Jaume de Graell. From there, panoramic views over the Segre Valley can be enjoyed.

Rowing and sailing are permitted on Pantà d’Oliana. Motorized boating is also permitted there. All three uses are subject to the submission of a declaration of responsibility.

Culture and Tradition

The Passió Viva presents nine theatrical performances every Good Friday. The streets and squares of Oliana serve as the venues. The scenes depict various episodes from the Passion and death of Jesus.

The Pujada al Castell tradition includes a climb to Sant Andreu del Castell every 11 September. The climb is made on foot or by bicycle. A mass is also part of the tradition. Bread is also distributed to all participants.

The Festa Major d’Oliana comprises five days of festivities. They include traditional and popular activities. A solemn mass and Sardana dances are also part of the celebrations.

Font de la Vila was the first fountain in the village of Oliana. For many years, it was the village’s only fountain.

The Pou de Gel has been prepared for visits. It contains an exhibition. The exhibition explains its traditional use for storing ice.

The bell tower was completed in 1778. It was built on an earlier defensive tower.

A one-hour guided tour is available of the old town or the Pou de Gel. It costs €2.00 per person. For a one-hour unguided visit to the Pou de Gel, a key is issued. The key is issued for €3.00.
