Culture and History

The Château de Valençay was built over the course of three centuries and acquired by Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord in 1803. A visit to the estate includes the château, park, garden, maze and mini-farm. The Château de Valençay is a ten-minute walk from Valençay railway station. The château has free outdoor parking as well as a bicycle garage at the ticket office; it can be reached via exits 13 or 14 of the A85 and exit 10 of the A20.

The château of Châtillon-sur-Indre is also connected with European history: it played a role in the conflicts between Henry II of England and Philip Augustus. The Musée archéologique de Martizay traces several millennia of local history, from hunter-gatherers to a Gallo-Roman villa. The Musée de la mine et des minéraux de Chaillac displays minerals from around the world, including famous coloured fluorites. The Musée du cuir et du parchemin de Levroux presents tools, machines and demonstrations related to the production of leather and parchment.

Further cultural connections lead to Ingrandes and Gargilesse. The Musée Henry de Monfreid in Ingrandes presents his travel accounts, works of art and memories of African expeditions. The Villa Algira in Gargilesse preserves personal belongings and family objects from the circle of George Sand. On the Train du Bas-Berry, railway stations, sections of track, level crossings and railway vehicles are protected as historic monuments. Guided tours are offered at the Étang Neuf site by reservation.

Nature

The 29 Espaces Naturels Sensibles of Indre include ponds, heathland, meadows and forests. The uses mentioned there include walking, observation and discoveries with the family. In the Brenne, a twelve-kilometre circular hiking trail also runs from the Étang du Blizon through ponds, natural meadows, heathland and wet forests.

For longer hikes, Indre has 7,000 kilometres of marked trails, including several GR routes.

Cycling and Trails

The Indre à vélo route is a 300-kilometre national cycle route that crosses Indre from Châtillon-sur-Indre to La Châtre. Disused railway lines are designated as suitable for cycle routes, which can help visitors discover the local heritage and monuments.

Water

Fishing and swimming are possible in lakes or rivers in Indre. Other water activities in Indre include kayaking, canoeing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.

Regional Products

Valençay has a dual AOC/AOP designation for wine and cheese. Pouligny-Saint-Pierre AOP cheese is a local product of Indre, as is the pyramid-shaped Valençay AOP cheese. The wines of Valençay and Reuilly are designated as AOC wines from the vineyards of Indre.
