Valençay can be discovered through its history, culture and landscape. Highlights include a historically significant château, a diverse vehicle collection and an extensive network of paths with connections for multi-day walking routes.
History and Culture
Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord acquired the Valençay estate in 1803. From 1808 to 1814, the Château de Valençay served as a residence for the Spanish princes sent into exile by Napoleon.
The former priory church also preserves a specific connection to this period: in 1813, its former choir, which now forms the apse, was restored at the expense of the Spanish princes. The Mémorial de la section F du S.O.E. commemorates the sacrifice of 126 missing British, Mauritian, Belgian, Polish and French agents. The tomb of Talleyrand is also freely accessible to visitors; there, they can pay their respects and learn about his life and work.
The Château de Valençay, a castle, is located in the immediate vicinity of Valençay. The Abbaye de Barzelle, a historic site, is also nearby. In the wider regional surroundings of Valençay are the Abbaye Notre-Dame du Landais, a historic site, and the Château de Romorantin, a castle.
Collections
The Musée de l’Automobile à Valençay displays more than 60 roadworthy vehicles dating from 1898 to the present day. The permanent exhibition includes fire engines, motorcycles, bicycles, enamel signs and historic posters.
Paths and Landscape
The GR® de Pays de Valençay is a 230-kilometre hiking trail through the Boischaut Nord region. Connections on the GR® de Pays de Valençay make it possible to take two- or three-day walking loops. The trail is also offered as a route comprising six walking loops.
The meadows at the foot of the Château de Valençay extend over 40 hectares along the Nahon and its millstream.
