Sarzay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Sarzay features a massive keep flanked at the corners by four round towers with loopholes, machicolations and covered battlements. It served as the setting for George Sand’s novel “Le Meunier d’Angibault”. A self-guided visit is possible at any time; a guided tour can be arranged on request. On average, the visit takes one hour.

Culture and History

The interior furnishings of the Église Saint-Pierre include a baptismal font, a cast-iron holy water font and a statue of Saint Jeanne de France, Duchess of Berry and daughter of Louis XI, in the Saint-Sulpice style. The church is flanked by buttresses and dates partly from the 16th century. Its nave and choir occupy a single rectangular space beneath a plastered barrel vault.

The Moulin de Baudry is a 16th-century mill on the Vauvre and belonged to the lordship of Sarzay. Historically, it could be reached from the Château de Sarzay via a direct path, and from Baudry on the opposite bank via a ford across the Vauvre and a footbridge beside the millrace. Today, the Moulin de Baudry is privately owned; its machinery inside is very well preserved.

Trails and Pilgrimage

The “Sur les traces du seigneur de Barbançois” hiking trail is 14.8 kilometres long and begins at the Place de l’Église in Sarzay. The Circuit pédestre n° 71 “Entre Vauvre et Couarde” forms a 7.7-kilometre circular route around Sarzay.

At the Fontaine Sainte-Madeleine in the hamlet of Ponderon in Sarzay, a statue was venerated during the pilgrimage on 22 July for protection against drought.
