Saint-Chartier: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Saint-Chartier combines significant architectural heritage, the literary history associated with George Sand, and signposted routes through the village and its immediate surroundings.
Culture and History
At the Château de Saint-Chartier, the main construction phases from the 13th, 15th and 17th centuries are documented. The Château et ses dépendances in Saint-Chartier is partially protected as a historic monument.
George Sand made Saint-Chartier the central setting of her novel “Les Maîtres Sonneurs”, published in 1853. For several decades, Saint-Chartier was also the venue for the Rencontres Internationales de Luthiers et Maîtres Sonneurs.
The parish church of Saint-Chartier preserves traces of an 11th- and 12th-century building that served as a priory of Déols. Its bell chapel was built in the 15th century; the church also houses a polychrome wooden Pietà.
On a hiking route through Saint-Chartier, the private Chapelle du Barbault is a point of interest. A covered washhouse is located on the hiking route near the church of Saint-Chartier. The fortress of Saint-Chartier stands out with its tall towers and pointed roofs.
Hiking and Trails
Saint-Chartier has three certified and signposted hiking trails. The “De Denise de Déols à Raymonde Vincent” hiking trail is 1.2 km long. The “Du plateau de Villechère au plateau de l’Igneraie” hiking trail is 19 km long.
The signposted Circuit No. 66 circular hiking trail, “À pied au pays de George Sand”, is 19 km long and begins in front of Saint-Chartier town hall. It connects the Plateau de Villechère with the Igneraie Valley. The long-distance hiking trail GR de Pays “Sur les Pas des Maîtres Sonneurs” also passes through the centre of Saint-Chartier.
