Culture and history

The medieval, cruciform Église Saint-Jean de Lurais has been protected as a historic monument since 1987. A monastic institution has been documented at the Château de Lurais since 1217. The priory building was converted into an abbot’s residence and fortified at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. The Château in Lurais has been protected as a historic monument since 1987.

The present-day building of the Château de Monteneaux does not appear to date back earlier than the 15th century. The Château de Monteneaux includes a square keep overlooking the Anglin.

Hiking and landscape

The GR 100 long-distance hiking trail runs for 250 km through the Indre département, from Vijon to Lurais. From Argenton-sur-Creuse, it follows the Creuse with its rocky steep slopes and viewpoints over the valley, continuing to Lurais.

The very easy hike “Balade à pied n°35 – La Creuse entre val et coteau” begins and ends in Lurais. It is 10 km long and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Nature and leisure

Plage de Lurais is a sandy beach on the Creuse with supervised swimming in July and August. It has children’s play facilities and free rental of bathing equipment.

Historic sites and surroundings

The historic site Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Merci-Dieu is located near Lurais. In the wider regional surroundings of Lurais are the historic site Prieuré d'Aigues-Joignant, the Abbaye de Saint-Savin monastery and the historic site Abbaye de l'Étoile. Parc de Boussay is also located near Lurais. The Mont Saint-Savin hill is situated in the wider regional surroundings of Lurais.

River and tradition

On 23 August 2025, the Fête des Barques took place in Lurais: a traditional procession of illuminated boats on the Creuse, with around ten decorated boats and fireworks launched from the island and the bridge.
