The religious architectural heritage of Saint-Aigny includes the Église Saint-Aignan, with a nave dating from the 13th century and a side aisle from the 15th century.

Culture and history

The apse of the Église Saint-Aignan is completely covered with frescoes that appear to have remained intact beneath a layer of lime. Since a decree dated 11 May 1932, the church has been listed as a historic monument.

The prehistoric dolmen in Coubernard in Saint-Aigny is known as the Dolmen de la Pierre au loup or Pierre du Charnet. Away from the centre of Saint-Aigny and near the Creuse, the Manoir de la Barre was built.

In the vicinity of Saint-Aigny, the Prieuré d'Aigues-Joignant is listed as a historic site. In the wider regional area, the Abbaye de Saint-Savin is listed as an abbey, the Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Merci-Dieu as a historic site, and the Abbaye de l'Étoile as a historic site.

Nature

The Bois de la Garenne protected area lies immediately northwest of the centre of Saint-Aigny. It occupies a steep slope above the left bank of the Creuse valley and consists mainly of a neutral oak, beech and hornbeam woodland on a north-facing slope.

The Bois de la Garenne is the only currently known site of the protected plant species Cardamine heptaphylla in the Centre region. Daubenton's bats reproduce in the area; larger populations of greater and lesser horseshoe bats also overwinter there.

Paths and water

An 8 km marked hiking trail named La fontaine de St-Aigny is designated in Saint-Aigny. The Circuit de l'eau runs for approximately 1 km from the centre of Saint-Aigny towards the Creuse and offers thematic stations focusing on the history and ecology of the watercourse.

The Voie Verte has access in Saint-Aigny at a level crossing on the section between Le Blanc and Ingrandes.
