Part of La Vernelle lies within the Natura 2000 bird protection area “Plateau de Chabris / La Chapelle-Montmartin” (FR2410023). La Vernelle partly forms an ecological extension of the Natura 2000 bird protection area Prairies du Fouzon, which borders the municipality.

Wine is produced in La Vernelle; the municipality lies in the plain south of the Fouzon, which stretches as far as Dun-le-Poëlier.

The AOP range of Fromagerie P. JACQUIN & Fils includes Selles-sur-Cher, Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, Valençay, Pouligny-Saint-Pierre and Crottin de Chavignol. At Fromagerie Jacquin, tours are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. from April to September; reservations are recommended.
