Martizay combines evidence of local history with archaeology and regional landscapes. The village is home to the Ancien prieuré de Notz-l'Abbé, which was founded in the 13th century. Martizay is also home to the Église Saint-Étienne and the Musée archéologique de Martizay.

History and Culture

The former chapel of the Ancien prieuré de Notz-l'Abbé contains murals depicting Christ in Majesty and Saint George slaying the dragon. The former chapel, including its murals, was classified as a historic monument by decree of 10 February 1987.

The Église Saint-Étienne was probably built around 1480 and retains a two-bay, rib-vaulted choir from that period. It also has six stained-glass windows created by Julien Fournier.

Archaeological Insights

The Musée archéologique de Martizay is dedicated to the prehistoric and Gallo-Roman periods. It displays flint tools, pottery, a grain mill, sarcophagi and painted furnishings from a Gallo-Roman villa.

The museum offers workshops for children aged 5 to 12.
