Trails and water

A signposted mountain bike circuit crosses Mérigny from the hamlet of Beauchapeau to the hamlet of Plaincourault. Canoe and kayak hire is also available in Mérigny, with departures in Mérigny and arrivals in Angles or Vicq-sur-Gartempe.

Culture and history

The Poirelle Cave, also known as Roche Noire, in Mérigny is a prehistoric necropolis discovered in 1953.

The Plaincourault Chapel is a Romanesque building dating from the end of the 12th century. It features wall paintings from the 12th to the 15th century depicting fantastic animals and medieval legends.

In the centre of Mérigny is the Church of Saint-Sulpice, which is believed to date back to the 13th century. A priory located in the Mérigny area has been classified as a historic monument since 1979. Also in the Mérigny area, a monastery belonging to the Order of Grandmont was built at the end of the 12th century. The former monastery in Mérigny is opened to visitors every year during the Journées du patrimoine.

Landscape and nature

Route No. 41, “Entre falaises et coteaux de l'Anglin”, follows small paths lined with dry-stone walls and offers views of the limestone plateau and the Anglin.

The 31-metre-high Rocher de la Dube on the Anglin is an established climbing site with several routes graded from 3 to 7b. The Rocher de la Dube is visited by the peregrine falcon, a protected bird species.
