Ardentes: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Ardentes is a place where sacred architectural history, evidence of ironworking and forest paths come together. The Église Saint-Martin is particularly distinctive: a Romanesque church in the oldest part of Ardentes, it has been classified as a historic monument since 1862. It was built in two main phases, during the first and second halves of the 12th century. Excavations in the choir have also uncovered Merovingian burials.
Churches, Paths and Iron
Ardentes’s older architecture also includes the 15th-century Église Saint-Vincent. Its bell tower and northern transept were rebuilt in 1869. The church contains a bell dating from 1578, dedicated to Sainte Mémoire. Near the Église Saint-Martin, the Ancienne voie romaine preserves a raised section built of stone, considered to be a remnant of the “chaussée de César”. At the Forge Basse, the Clavières water reservoir still preserves its “pelles”, which were immortalised by painters.
A broader historical dimension shapes the Indre Valley between Châteauroux and Ardentes: from 1670 to 1874, the Forge Haute, the Forge Basse and the Forge de l’Isle shaped the landscape there. For more than a century, they formed one of France’s largest ironworking complexes and produced iron mainly intended for the navy.
Nature and Paths
The Étang de Berthommiers lies in the heart of the Châteauroux state forest. It has a children’s play area and a picnic area. A walking path around the pond takes about 30 minutes.
Other paths and activities provide different ways to explore the surrounding area. The Sentier des écoles is an accessible walking route created by two generations of pupils and their teachers, offering views over the Indre. The “sur les pas de la biche” orienteering course is a playful activity in the forest, with seven hidden stations and a task at each stage.
The Châteauroux state forest also has marked paths, developed circular routes, car parks and nine themed information boards. The Ardentes tourism portal provides a map of the short hiking trails.
Events and Activities
The Médiathèque d’Ardentes organises various events, exhibitions and performances throughout the year. It also has a youth area where various book-related activities are organised.
Rétro Méca Centre organises monthly gatherings on the Place de la République in Ardentes. The Fête de Saint-Leu features a local producers’ market, a brocante and a musical procession in early September. On 18 August 2024, Ardentes hosted the 15th Rétro Méca Centr’Expo, featuring classic cars and a parts market at the Ancien stade. The Club hippique d’Ardentes offers riding lessons and trail rides.
