Pouligny-Saint-Pierre: Holiday apartments and houses

The AOP Pouligny-Saint-Pierre is a pyramid-shaped goat’s cheese made from raw whole milk. The designation of origin for Pouligny-Saint-Pierre has existed since 1972.

Nature

The Bois des Roches near Pouligny-Saint-Pierre overlooks the Creuse Valley from its cliffs and is open to the public. The Bois des Roches discovery trail is a 2 km educational trail; it begins at a car park with an information board at the entrance to the hamlet of Les Roches. The Bois-des-Roches trail includes five educational stations and ends at a viewpoint over the Creuse.

Near Pouligny-Saint-Pierre, the Bois des Roches preserves prehistoric rock shelters from the Upper Palaeolithic. A cave in the Bois des Roches near Pouligny-Saint-Pierre is open for caving from April to September. The Bois des Roches can be reached from the RD 950 between Le Blanc and Tournon-Saint-Martin via the turn-off at Bénavent and the hamlet of Les Roches.

Cuisine

The local tradition of producing Pouligny-Saint-Pierre dates back almost two centuries: farmers made some cheeses for their families’ own consumption. In Pouligny-Saint-Pierre, the Maison du Fromage et des produits locaux is a shop and tasting venue for regional products; it offers more than 60 varieties of farm-produced and dairy goat’s cheese from the AOP Pouligny-Saint-Pierre. Tastings at the Maison du Fromage are available by prior reservation for groups of 10 or more.

History

The centre of Pouligny-Saint-Pierre developed in the Middle Ages around the parish church of Saint-Pierre. The Église Saint-Pierre is a historic monument built over several periods, with construction phases dating from the second half of the 12th century, the first quarter of the 13th century, around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and the second half of the 19th century.

Events

The Fête de la chèvre et du fromage de Pouligny-Saint-Pierre takes place on the first weekend of September. At one edition of the event, the Sunday programme included a flea market, a hike, a craft market and lunch.
