Chassignolles combines sacred architectural heritage, rural history, natural features and paths through the bocage landscape. The character of the village can be seen in its historic buildings, regional culture and specific routes through the countryside.

Culture

The Église du prieuré Saint-Etienne features a main section dating from the mid-12th century, as well as two seigneurial chapels from the late 15th century.

The Maison des Traditions is a municipal museum housed in a former Berry farm. It presents the history of agriculture and rural life in the Vallée-Noire from 1850 to 1950 and displays tools, objects and machines associated with disappeared working methods and professions. It also offers a varied cultural programme featuring events, performances, talks, activities and temporary exhibitions.

Experiences

At La Grange aux Pianos, artists accustomed to performing on the world’s major stages take to the stage. It also presents rarely performed works by Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel, Fauré and Saint-Saëns.

The “Promenade avec Célestine” trail follows a story about seven letters found in the 1860s in an uninhabited house in Chassignolles; six of them were marriage proposals to the innkeeper’s daughter. As circular walking route no. 2, the “Promenade avec Célestine” is 3 km long, takes around one hour and is considered very easy.

Nature

Chassignolles lies within the ZNIEFF “Haut bassin versant de la Vauvre”. This area forms one of the source regions of the Indre River and is considered one of the richest refuges for biodiversity, as well as one of the last refuges for species living in wetland habitats in the Indre département.

The landscape around Chassignolles features oak woods and hedgerows that define the boundaries of the fields in the bocage landscape.

Trails

The approximately 15-km circular route “La campagne au fil des siècles” leads around Chassignolles through the bocage landscape, includes a ford and follows the Vauvre, whose banks are lined with trees and shrubs on the slopes. The circular route starts at Chassignolles Town Hall.

The TRANSBE SUD section of the Transberrichonne leads towards Saint-Denis-de-Jouhet, Fougerolles, Chassignolles and Crevant.
