Châteauroux combines historic cultural sites with green landscapes, water-based activities and events. The cityscape brings together history, art and leisure activities.

Culture and Events

The Lisztomanias were founded in Châteauroux in 2002. Their programme includes concerts, piano academies, conferences, café concerts and workshops for children. Every summer, the international dance and music festival Stage-Festival DARC also takes place. It is open to dancers, spectators, residents and visitors.

The Musée Bertrand houses more than 15,000 works and can be visited free of charge all year round on a self-guided tour. The Couvent des Cordeliers is an exhibition venue for modern and contemporary art. The historical offering is complemented by the “Légende impériale” tour, dedicated to General Bertrand.

Nature and History

Prairie Saint-Gildas is a 17-hectare natural wetland on the banks of the Indre, with particularly rich flora and fauna. The Jardin des Cordeliers is a 5,000 m² terraced garden with regularly laid-out beds in the French style, as well as streams, a basin, two washhouses and a pond. Parc Balsan is open to the public all year round.

Château Raoul stands on a rocky promontory above the left bank of the Indre. It is occasionally open to visitors, particularly in summer and during the European Heritage Days. In the historic centre of Châteauroux, there is a self-guided tour of the city's history and heritage lasting around one hour and 15 minutes.

Nearby is the Notre-Dame de Déols abbey in Déols, north of Châteauroux; it was founded in 917. The abbey's medieval garden comprises twelve planted squares enclosed by woven fencing and is divided into three areas: the “Jardin des Simples”, with plants used in medieval medicine; the “Jardin d’Amour”, inspired by medieval poetry and courtly love; and the “Jardin Céleste”, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Water and Leisure

The Base nautique de Belle-Isle offers canoeing and kayaking, windsurfing, Optimist sailing, pedal boating and stand-up paddleboarding. Supervised swimming and fishing are also available.

Monky Châteauroux provides an indoor leisure centre covering more than 5,000 m². Facilities include bowling, laser tag, trampolines, children's areas, arcade games and virtual reality experiences.

Other places: Ingrandes, Cluis, Meunet-Planches, La Perouille, Lye, Azay-Le-Ferron, Chassignolles, Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre.

To the overarching travel overview: Indre.
