History and architecture

The Église Saint-Etienne-et-Saint-Paxent was built before the end of the 12th century. Its nave dates from the 13th century, while its side chapels date from the 15th century. The two abstract stained-glass windows were created by Jean Mauret in 1972 and 1975.

The Forteresse de Cluis-Dessous is listed as a historic monument and was built on a rocky spur bounded by the Bouzanne. It comprises an entrance gate with the remains of a drawbridge, a 12th-century keep, a curtain wall, and residential buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Trinité next to the Forteresse de Cluis-Dessous has Romanesque origins and was built in the 15th century. During the pilgrimages to Notre-Dame de la Trinité, the statue of the Virgin Mary is venerated on the Sunday after Pentecost and on 15 August.

Culture and design

The Manoir de Cluis-Dessus is accessible on request at the town hall reception desk. It preserves an interior dating from the time of Louis XIII, with decorated wood panelling, Aubusson tapestries, and 17th-century paintings. The reception hall in Cluis town hall can also be visited by prior arrangement with the mairie; it is furnished with 17th-century Aubusson tapestries.

The ornamental gardens designed by Gilles Clément behind the Manoir de Cluis-Dessus and the town hall are accessible from the street. The Halle de Cluis is a restored 17th-century building made almost entirely of wood and is now used for markets, meals, exhibitions, and other festive events.

Paths and landscape

A total of five hiking trails are accessible from the Halle de Cluis. Circular route no. 14 connects the ruins of the Château de Cluis-Dessous with the large viaduct above the bocage landscapes of Bas Berry. The Viaduc de l’Auzon is 499 metres long and has 20 arches.
