Mauvières: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mauvières lies on the border between the Petite Brenne and the Boischaut sud. The town’s history features impressive evidence from different periods side by side: the Maison-forte de Villiers dates from the late 15th and first half of the 16th centuries and contains murals from around 1500. It is partly registered as a Monument historique and partly classified as a Monument historique.

Culture and History

Other historical traces in Mauvières include the Ferme du Bas-Durenet, which was registered as a Monument historique in September 2025. The historic La Ronde lime kiln site is still visible. Charneuil also preserves traces of industrial development: the settlement grew out of forges that were later converted into a hydroelectric power station and subsequently into a facility operated by the company Delecta du Blanc; in connection with this industrial history, a particularly interesting workers’ housing estate developed there.

Paths and Landscape

The hiking trail “Le val d'Anglin n°39” leads to the hamlet of Villiers, which has preserved its old buildings. On the banks of the Anglin, the same trail offers an impressive view of the Château d’Aigues Joignant on the opposite bank. The Mauvières area is also home to two mills on the Anglin.

Surroundings

The historic site of Prieuré d'Aigues-Joignant is located in the immediate vicinity of Mauvières. In the wider region are the Abbaye de Saint-Savin, the ruins of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Colombe, the historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Merci-Dieu, and the Mont Saint-Savin hill.
