Culture and History

The Priory of Saint-Benoît-du-Sault was founded at the end of the 10th century and served as an outpost of the Abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire in Aquitaine. The Church of Saint-Benoît-du-Sault is a pre-Romanesque building dating from the 11th century and features a remarkable roof structure shaped like an inverted boat hull. The medieval belfry of Saint-Benoît-du-Sault, whose clock is still working, symbolises the inhabitants’ independence from the feudal lord.

Market and Photography

The weekly market in Saint-Benoît-du-Sault takes place at the Place du Champ de Foire on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Every summer at the beginning of August, the Rencontres Photographiques also take place in Saint-Benoît-du-Sault. During the event, which lasts around ten days, exhibitions of author photography are displayed in the priory.

Paths through the Countryside

Cycle Tour No. 18 begins in Saint-Benoît-du-Sault. It leads through bocage landscape, a wild valley, and along a small forest road. From a slope near the Route de César, the tour offers a viewpoint overlooking the Abloux Valley.

The circular hiking trail “Around the Priory” highlights the medieval quarters around the buildings of the priory built in the 10th century.
