Dunet is a place whose history can be read in its religious buildings, traces of fortifications, and roads with historical connections.

Culture

In the hamlet of Vouhet in the municipality of Dunet stands the former castle chapel, dedicated to Saint Peter, near the La Motte Chauvigny parcel, where a castle once stood. The main construction phase of the Chapelle de Vouhet dates from the 12th century. It was listed as a historic monument by decree of 28 February 1928. Its frescoes depict symbolic scenes connected with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

The Église Saint-Martial de Dunet was formerly a Benedictine priory dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges. The church has a two-bay nave followed by a choir with a flat east end.

History

The remains of the Vouhet keep belong to a medieval fortress built by the counts of Poitou in the 11th and 12th centuries to monitor the enclave of Marche.

The ruins of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Colombe are located in the area around Dunet. In the wider region surrounding Dunet are the historic sites of Abbaye d'Aubignac and Prieuré d'Aigues-Joignant.

On the way

The “Balade à pied à Dunet – Chapelle et clocher” walking route takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes and is 11 kilometres long.

Cycle route no. 19, “Les coteaux de l'Anglin”, is an unmarked circular cycling route near Dunet and offers views over the valley. The name recalls that iron has been extracted from mines in this area since ancient times.
