Argenton-Sur-Creuse: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Argenton-sur-Creuse combines a rich textile history with historic buildings, art, walking trails and a wide range of leisure activities. Between the banks of the Creuse, the old streets and special places such as the Chapelle Saint-Benoît, a vivid picture of culture and active exploration emerges.

Culture

A central site in the town’s history is the Musée de la Chemiserie et de l’Elégance Masculine. It is housed in Argenton-sur-Creuse’s first ready-to-wear workshop and traces the history of the Argentonnais textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its textile collections on men’s clothing range from the late 17th century to the present day. They are complemented by tools and machines formerly used in garment production, as well as archives from local businesses. Since 17 September 2003, the museum has been recognised as a “Musée de France” under the French Heritage Code.

The Chapelle Saint-Benoît was built between 1497 and 1502 and classified as a “Monument historique” by decree of 31 May 1944. Today, it hosts exhibitions. The Moulin du Rabois also represents the transformation of historic sites: it was rebuilt in 1936 and became the Maison des Arts in 2004. The Centre d’Art Contemporain le Rabois is located on the ground floor of the Maison des Arts.

Another striking landmark is the “Good Lady” chapel. Its bell tower carries a 6.50-metre-high, gilded statue of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus.

Things to Do

Guided city tours in Argenton-sur-Creuse lead to historic heritage sites, the banks of the Creuse, mills and the town’s old streets. The “Balade de ville” starts at the Place de la République. Along the Creuse, the projecting balconies of the houses are known as “galleries”.

For longer hikes, the 104-kilometre GR de Pays Val de Creuse is available. The route can be completed in five days or in themed day stages of 14 to 25 kilometres.

Leisure

The Centre aquatique includes a 25-metre sports pool and a leisure area with a slide, a counter-current system and bubble benches. The indoor area also includes a children’s paddling pool, a whirlpool and a sauna.

The outdoor area of the Centre aquatique features a leisure pool with a bubbling lagoon, a lazy river and a water cannon, a three-lane slide and a large paddling pool. There is also an 18-hole mini-golf course open all year round.

Local Life

The weekly market in Argenton-sur-Creuse takes place every Saturday throughout the year. It offers cheese, fruit, vegetables and local products.
