Mézières-en-Brenne was the country estate of the lords of Brenne for more than three centuries. Its history is reflected in sacred art, medieval traces and paths that connect the town with its water-rich landscape.

History and sacred art

The Collégiale Sainte Marie-Madeleine was founded by Alix de Brabant and consecrated in 1339. Its stained-glass windows from the 14th and 16th centuries depict the family fortunes of numerous lords who ruled over Brenne. Only two towers and an old dovecote remain of the town’s original feudal castle. The classified remains of a 15th-century castle are located very close to the Claise diversion canal.

Paths through the town and countryside

The Circuit des cartes postales is a 3.6-kilometre walking route. It is marked by 39 old postcards and passes former medieval residences that bear witness to the town’s great age.

At the Base de loisirs de Bellebouche, an adventure course offers a 17-metre-high jump, a zip line and five treetop courses. Pedal boats, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are also available for hire there.

Water and nature

Les bords de Claise No. 42 is a waterside walking route through a green landscape designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible. Les prés du canal is a wetland between the Claise and its diversion channel. It includes various wooded areas and wet habitats such as ponds, fish-spawning grounds and ditches. Shaded paths beneath the trees run in the immediate vicinity of the water.

Crafts and weekly market

La Boutique du Moulin displays original works by around ten craft artists and also has a space for temporary exhibitions. The weekly market presents regional products ranging from food to textiles.
