Seine-Et-Marne: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Seine-et-Marne is home to the UNESCO-listed Château and Park of Fontainebleau, the UNESCO-listed town of Provins, and the Pays de Fontainebleau Biosphere Reserve. Provins is a medieval UNESCO World Heritage town and is considered a unique testimony to the Champagne fairs of the 12th and 13th centuries. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Seine-et-Marne can then continue their search for accommodation.

Nature and trails

Seine-et-Marne encompasses around 140,000 hectares of forest and approximately 4,400 kilometres of waterways. Around thirty Espaces naturels sensibles in Seine-et-Marne are open to the public. More than 3,000 kilometres of signposted cycling and hiking trails cross the département. The Chemin des Roses is a 17-kilometre promenade for walkers, horse riders and cyclists.

The sensitive natural area of Marais d'Épisy contains a pond, a wet meadow, reed beds and a peat bog in the Loing Valley. Seine-et-Marne also offers climbing, as well as rowing and canoeing or kayaking on its waterways.

Cuisine

Brie de Melun is an AOP soft cheese made exclusively from raw cow's milk. Production, processing and maturation take place in Seine-et-Marne and in nearby municipalities in Aube and Yonne. Brie de Melun is smaller than Brie de Meaux, measures 27–28 centimetres and can mature for up to ten weeks.

Culture and history

The département operates five departmental museums in Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin, Vulaines-sur-Seine, Barbizon, Égreville and Nemours. The Château de Blandy-les-Tours offers cultural events as well as a modernised museum presentation and a modernised visitor route.

The Palace and Park of Fontainebleau was used by French kings from the 12th century onwards and remodelled in the 16th century under François I. Vaux-le-Vicomte is a masterpiece of 17th-century classical architecture in Seine-et-Marne. The Vaux-le-Vicomte Carriage Museum traces the development of vehicles, horses and horse-related professions.

The underground passages of Provins originated from a “terre à foulon” quarry; this material was used in the town's cloth industry. Regular guided tours of the underground passages are available. The medieval town of Provins is connected to Line P; direct trains run from Paris-Est. The medieval heritage includes the Tour César, the Grange aux dîmes, the underground passages, the Prieuré Saint-Ayoul and the Musée de Provins et du Provinois.
