La Chapelle-la-Reine is located in the Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français and on the edge of the Forêt de Fontainebleau.
History
A document from 1125 mentions La Chapelle-la-Reine under the name Capella Réginae. Another document from 1150 refers to the place as Capellan Gastinedi, meaning “La chapelle en Gâtinais”.
The oldest part of the present-day church, the Chapelle de la Vierge, is dated to the 13th century based on its architecture. The present-day sacristy of the Église Sainte-Geneviève also contains a Romanesque portal from the church.
From the 17th century onwards, La Chapelle-la-Reine was crossed by the royal road between Givet and Orléans, now the RD 152. For more than two centuries, the village housed a horse post station along this route.
Culture and Local History
Les Amis du Patrimoine published a book in 2015 about the history of La Chapelle-la-Reine, from prehistory to the 20th century. The book is available at the La Chapelle-la-Reine municipal library for free consultation or for purchase for 27 euros.
In the area around La Chapelle-la-Reine, Les Amis du Patrimoine organises two guided tours each year. One is a one-day tour focusing on the heritage and history of a neighbouring village or town. The second takes place together with the Amis de la Forêt de Fontainebleau and combines a guided visit to a site with a subsequent commented walk through the forest. This second event is open to members of both associations.
Nature and Early History
The Haute Borne megalith is one of the megaliths in the southern Gâtinais that provide evidence of human presence for at least 3,000 years.

The market in La Chapelle-la-Reine offers food, clothing, haberdashery and knick-knacks or small decorative items. The market includes parking spaces on Rue Carnot and in the square known as “des maronniers”, at the corner of Rue Général De Gaulle and Rue des Champs.
