History and Culture

Saint-Mesmes is home to a listed church with a 12th-century bell tower, as well as a 13th-century nave and side aisle. The church has been repaired many times because of its fragility.

The Ferme de l’Oratoire in Vineuil dates from the early 18th century. The estate comprises a dwelling house, outbuildings, a tithe barn and a dovecote.

The Moulin de Tussac, which has almost completely disappeared today, was purchased by the VAN NES family in 1935. Flax produced in the region was retted and scutched there until 1968.

Two brick bridges have been preserved in the La Sablonnière district. A steam railway once ran over the bridge next to the Beuvronne Bridge, transporting sugar beet from Saint-Mesmes to the sugar factory in Mitry-Mory.

In the hamlet of Vineuil, the former execution site commemorates 26 and 27 August 1944, when eleven people were shot there. The site is now called Rue des Martyrs.
