Saint-Mammès lies at the confluence of the Seine and the Loing. The Fontainebleau–Nemours section of La Scandibérique passes through the town; from Saint-Mammès, the route leaves the Seine and follows the Canal du Loing.

Geographical setting

The location on two waterways is also reflected in the Saint-Mammès lock on the Loing, which was built in 1724. On the Canal du Loing, it is distinctive because it has side walls instead of slopes lined with stones.

Saint-Mammès offers the tourist route “The World of Barge People”. It leads along paths, lanes and quays and conveys the history and work of the inland waterway boatmen of Saint-Mammès.

Another historical trace can be found at the church car park: a prehistoric sandstone polissoir is displayed there, providing evidence of prehistoric settlement in Saint-Mammès.

The historic shipping heritage also includes the barge Le Châlet. Since 19 December 2022, it has been classified in France as a protected object under the Monuments historiques. At the time of its protection or examination, the barge was located at house numbers 35 and 37 on Quai de la Croix Blanche in Saint-Mammès.

Water and events

The Paris water jousting events take place on the Seine every Sunday from May to September. The Saint-Mammès water jousting club accepts people aged seven and over who would like to learn this sport.

The Saint-Mammès market takes place every Sunday morning along the Seine quay. Every three years, Saint-Mammès also hosts a two-day festive family event celebrating water and the nautical, aquatic and maritime world.
