Culture and History

The Cluniac priory in Le Mez de la Madeleine dates from the 11th century and is now privately owned. The church of Sainte-Colombe dates from the 11th to 12th centuries and displays Romanesque features: the nave and transept are of equal height, alongside rectangular pillars and Romanesque arcades.

The bell tower of the church of Sainte-Colombe was added in 1754 and bears a so-called “chapeau” roof – a style that is rare in the Brie. The Maladrerie of Close Barbe is listed as a historic monument; its two columns with capitals and four bays with preserved groin vaults are protected.

The Maladrerie was founded by Henri I, known as “Le Libéral”, Count of Champagne. Henri I was Count of Champagne from 1152 to 1182.

Getting Around

The “À la découverte de Saint-Loup-de-Naud” hiking trail runs along the boundary wall of the former Maladrerie of Close Barbe, crosses the D403 and then reaches the railway stop. Via a slope along the Voulzie, the same trail reaches Saint-Loup and leads through the valleys of the Dragon and the Voulzie to Sainte-Colombe.

By rail, Sainte-Colombe is served by Line P, which connects Provins with Paris-Gare de l’Est. In addition, Probus Line 17 connects Sainte-Colombe with Provins and Longueville.
