The Église Saint-Germain is listed as a sight in a visitor guide to the Provinois region. Its construction began in the 12th century with the nave and continued until the 16th century; it was completed with the construction of the choir.
Culture and History
The protected parts of the Église Saint-Germain, designated in 1978, include the nave, the bell tower, the two bays of the side aisles on either side of the bell tower, as well as the ruins of the choir and side aisles to the east. The church was registered as a historic monument in 1926 and partially classified as a historic monument in 1978.
Around the year 1000, Benedictine monks from the Troyes abbey of Montier-la-Celle founded the Saint-Germain priory in Montceaux-lès-Provins. The parish church served as the seat of the former Saint-Germain priory for almost 600 years. In the nave, the north wall features three grave slabs belonging to the Lenharrée family, the lords of Montaceaux in the 16th century.
The events of the First World War can also be seen in the building: The bell tower of the Église Saint-Germain was destroyed by French artillery on 6 September 1914 in order to eliminate a German observation post that was directing the fire of the enemy guns. The Cimetière Militaire in Montceaux-lès-Provins contains the graves of those killed, most of whom died on 6 September 1914 during the fighting in Montceaux-lès-Provins.
Nature
The Ru de Volmerot and the Ruisseau de l’Etang are natural water features of Montceaux-lès-Provins. The wetland area of Le Bois Planté includes the Ru de Volmerot and ponds; it is one of the wetlands whose preservation is intended to support ecological corridors.
