Culture and History
The national necropolis of Chambry is the final resting place of 1,334 soldiers who fell for France in the Battle of the Ourcq in September 1914. The German military cemetery on the other side of the railway line from the national necropolis of Chambry contains the remains of 998 soldiers who fell in the Meaux area in September 1914.
The national necropolis of Chambry can be visited independently throughout the year. In Chambry, the Musée de la Grande Guerre’s “Bataille de la Marne 1914” route includes the Chambry civil cemetery, the French military necropolis, and the German military cemetery.
During the Battle of the Marne, the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul housed a military hospital and was damaged by German bombardments. Chambry’s church also has a 16th-century stained-glass window that was restored after the First World War and in 2002. According to tradition, its northern aisle, with carved capitals featuring animal motifs, is the only surviving part of the earlier building.
The Château d’Automne is one of Chambry’s notable heritage features; specific protection objectives have been established for this heritage feature. The Monument des Quatre Routes was built by army pioneers at the request of General Gallieni. Three calvaries stand at crossroads in Chambry and bear witness to the commune’s religious past.
Chambry’s communal washhouse is accessible via Rue des Prés. It was built in 1893 on the east bank of the Mansigny stream. The Fontaine-Reine washhouse on Rue des Prés is the only surviving one of four washhouses in Chambry. Chambry’s village fountain continues to flow; its reconstructed stone basin occupies the northern part of Place du Monument.
Landscape and Trails
The “Les champs de bataille de l’Ourcq” hiking trail passes through memorial sites from the Battle of the Ourcq, which took place from September 5 to 10, 1914, at the beginning of the Battle of the Marne, as well as mainly through cultivated plains and partly through woodland.
