Culture and History
The former Oratorian college in Juilly was founded by the Oratorians in 1638 and built largely in the 18th century. Several staircases and wood paneling from the 18th century have been preserved in the complex. It is arranged around four open courtyards, reminiscent of monastic architectural plans from the 17th and 18th centuries. The chapel was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, while the library was constructed of concrete by Henry Faucheur at the beginning of the 20th century.
The former Oratorian college in Juilly is partially listed as a historic monument; the listing took effect on May 6, 2021. The protected complex includes the Sainte-Geneviève fountain in its entirety. The Oratorian college in Juilly also contains the funerary monument for the right arm of Cardinal de Bérulle. The monument contains the cardinal’s hand and right arm. Nicolas Dangu was prior of Juilly from 1526 to 1567.
The Sœurs de Saint-Louis congregation was founded in 1842 in Juilly, in the Diocese of Meaux, by Abbé Louis Bautain. Its archival holdings include various works about Bautain, the Dames de Saint-Louis, and Juilly. The archives of the Sœurs de Saint-Louis in Juilly welcome interested visitors by appointment for consultation and access.
Church
The Saint-Étienne Church in Juilly was rebuilt in the 19th century by the architect Louis Auguste Boileau. It has an iron structure with pillars, capitals, and ribs resting on stone and cemented bases and floors. The Stations of the Cross are made of carved, polychrome-painted oak with bas-relief decoration. The statue Notre-Dame des moissons is a polychrome wooden sculpture carved directly from the wood. The statue of Christ on the Cross is a polychrome figure on a flat cross with a polygonal base and stands on the high altar of Saint-Étienne Church.
Nature and Trails
The park of the former college of Juilly contains remarkable gardens that have been included in the preliminary inventory of the general French cultural heritage inventory since July 31, 2003. The walking trail along the Beuvronne and the Ru de la Maquerelle is 11.5 km long.
