Culture and History

The crypts contain the tombs of the founding family of Notre Dame de Jouarre Abbey. The Merovingian sculpture in the crypt rests on two rows of three Gallo-Roman columns each, crowned with Merovingian capitals made of white marble.

The Romanesque tower of Notre Dame de Jouarre Abbey is a former bell tower built in the 12th century. In this tower, a themed tour traces the history of the abbey and the community, as well as the nuns’ lives today. The present abbey church of Notre Dame de Jouarre dates from the 1860s and now preserves three stained-glass windows from the 16th century.

The Briard Museum’s collection includes various objects from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The Briard Museum also collects material evidence of rural life in the farming civilizations of Brie.

The Fromagerie Ganot offers guided tours during which visitors can discover the secrets of Brie cheeses. In the cellars of the Fromagerie Ganot, organic farmhouse Brie made in collaboration with Ferme Ste-Colombe matures alongside Coulommiers, Brie de Meaux AOP and Brie de Melun AOP.
