Touquin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
A simple yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Touquin to the Church of Saint-Étienne. The route is 8.6 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. It begins at Touquin Town Hall and runs through the classified Yerres Valley. A château and former watercress beds characterise the water-shaped landscape there.
Renting a holiday apartment in Touquin is a trip in its own right.
Culture
The Church of Saint-Étienne was founded in the 12th century and altered several times in the 15th century and between the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside is a relic of Saint Restituta, a martyr from the late 3rd century. Plaster and stone sarcophagi dating from 1895, found near the church, suggest that an older building once stood there, possibly from the 7th or 8th century.
The washhouse on the Route du Tau is also part of the local history. It was renovated in 2017 with the support of the Fondation du Patrimoine.
Archaeology
Archaeological excavations in Touquin uncovered a 1.40-metre-thick wall from the 12th or 13th century in 2004. It dates from the period of the great Champagne fairs. Further excavations uncovered the southern part of a 12th-century Merovingian necropolis in 2006.
The ARCHEO-SAT77 archaeological and heritage centre offers a chronological exhibition tour from the Palaeolithic to the present day. It also presents discoveries from archaeological investigations carried out over two decades. On opening days, as well as on Tuesdays by appointment, guided tours and educational activities are available for school classes and groups.
Activities
The Société Archéologique de Touquin offers themed hiking trails and organises annual archaeological excavation campaigns open to everyone, including amateurs, volunteers, placement students and scientists. Training courses on archaeological excavations, assembling pottery and restoring finds are also offered.
