Culture
The Tour César is a 12th-century keep and a symbol of the power of Provins and the Counts of Champagne in the Middle Ages. Its upper levels offer views across Provins and the surrounding countryside.
The Musée de Provins et du Provinois, designated a “Musée de France”, is housed in the Maison Romane, one of the oldest civilian buildings in Provins. In the Grange aux dîmes, a staged display presents merchants and medieval occupations.
Around 150 historic houses in Provins preserve medieval vaulted cellars that were intended for storing goods. The guided tour “Provins, découverte et dégustation” combines cultural heritage with a tasting.
History
The underground passages of Provins were originally a quarry for fuller's earth, a material used in Provins’s cloth industry. Later, the cavities served as shelters, storage areas, cellars and even meeting places for secret societies.
The Souterrains of Provins offer regular guided tours for groups of no more than 25 people. An audio-guided tour is available at the Prieuré Saint-Ayoul; the origins of its architectural ensemble date back to 996.
Gardens
The Prieuré Saint-Ayoul includes a medieval plant garden with yew trees, stonecrops and serviceberries. The Roseraie de Provins presents more than 450 rose varieties in a thematically designed 3.5-hectare garden.
